Geology + Modelr = Seismic

Modelr builds simple forward models of reflection seismic responses. In other words, you give it some geology, and it tries to predict what seismic reflection data would look like.

Why? We think forward models are the most important thing that nobody does, because the tools are esoteric and expensive. Well, they were.

Who we are

Matt Hall at HUB South Shore

Matt Hall

Matt has a PhD in sedimentology from the University of Manchester, UK, and about 17 years’ experience in the hydrocarbon industry. He's worked for Landmark, Statoil, and ConocoPhillips. Matt founded Agile Geoscience in 2010, and co-founded The HUB South Shore in 2013.

Evan Bianco at Unsolved Problems Unsession

Evan Bianco

Evan is from Calgary, Canada, and studied geophysics at the Universities of Alberta and Victoria. Since graduating with a master's in 2008, Evan has accumulated 5 years’ experience in Halifax. Evan joined Matt in Agile Geoscience right at the start, and looks after geophysics.

Ben Bougher at Geophysics Hackathon

Lots of other people have contributed to modelr. Sean Ross-Ross (now at Continuum) built the original webserver. Another UBC grad, Ben Bougher (above; now at Via Science) rebuilt the backend. And Justin Heisler rebuilt the front end.

The geeky details

This web app is built in Python on the open source goodness of NumPy, SciPy, and lots of other libraries, including our own agilegeo geophysical utility library.

The front end is built on Python, with a bit of JavaScript, using the amazing Twitter Bootstrap front-end framework. The app server is built in Python with the Jinja templating framework, and runs on Google App Engine.

The back end Modelr app, where all the science lives, is a custom-built Python web server and runs on Amazon EC2. The back end is entirely open source and can be found on GitHub.

The first version of the app was built by Matt and Sean Ross-Ross in the spring of 2012.
